FREE MOVIE TICKETS

For all of you movie lovers out there, Monday mornings just got a little more exciting.  Set your alarms because student life is giving away FREE MOVIE PASSES to Roxy Cinema. There is no fine print.  No annoying survey.  Nothing, but free movie tickets all semester long.  Here is how it works:  Every Monday at 8:00 a.m. student life, located on the third floor of the Davis Center, is handing out free movie cinema tickets. They are creatively calling it ‘Cats at the Movies.’  All you need to do is present your student I.D. to the nice person siting at the student life desk and then…BAM!  Free movie pass!  It is that easy. Sometimes I mosey in at around 8:30 and they still have a stack of tickets, but I recommend getting to the student office as early as you can because these tickets usually go fast.  After all, you are competing with 10,000 other students desperate for free shit.  You only get one ticket though, so tell your lazy friend that you can’t score him or her a free ticket.   Now we just need to convince the university to give us free printing and justice would be restored to the world.  But free movie tickets are a start.

Merril Roxy Cinema is situated on the corner of College Street and South Winooski Avenue in
downtown Burlington. Practically next to Church Street, the Roxy is in an excellent location and is an easy walk from campus or any downtown spot.  It’s a small, humble theater with a fun old school vibe and does an excellent job at balancing independent films and big blockbuster hits. General Admission tickets cost $9.50 and Students tickets cost $8.50.  Movies can be an expensive night out, which makes cats at the movies such a cool opportunity.

Maybe Roxy Cinemas didn’t impress you or maybe it isn’t showing the movie you want to see. As a backup, I will tell you that there are three other theater options in the greater Burlington area. Majestic 10 is located in the Williston shopping plaza.  The Majestic is BIG, its FLASHY and it has an escalator that takes you up to the ticket booth!!!  Essex Cinema has the T-rex Theater with giant sofa chair seating. I kid you not; the seating is probably from lazy boy furniture.   Star wars 3D was pretty epic here.   Then there is Palace 9 located off of Shelburne road in a creepy back parking lot.  Sketchy palace 9 has a soft spot in my heart.  Its always empty no matter what day and time you go. And there is always some apathetic teenager working the counter.  If you ever want to see a horror movie or want to smuggle something into the theater I highly recommend going here.

So get out there! Get your free movie ticket! And get lost in a good movie!

  3. I can NOT believe this didn't set off my free-dar as soon as it began. You can count on me being there at 0800 sharp for the remainder of the semester.

Good call on palace 9 as well. I am 145 lbs soaking wet and I have no problem walking in there with a 6-pack of tall boys under the front of my sweatshirt!

As a fellow lover of all cinema, I appreciate the info! Kudos Mr. Redox.

  4. Palace 9 may very well be my favorite theater in the Queen City area. It's a little dirty, and throws of some serious sketchy vibes; in other words it feels like home. As far as smuggling drinks in, never mind hiding it under your shirt, I've walked right in with a backpack full of beer. The kids working there are like the honey badger, they really just don't give a shit.

  7. I knew right from the get-go that this would not be as good as the original 1993 masterpiece. The only thing I wondered was if it would be in the same league. Although not as good, it is inferior by little. Although not a masterpiece, I call it a "near-masterpiece" like The Outsiders and The Aviator.
